Information: Real or Fake flyer?

Post by Wigs » 08 Nov 2010, 16:43

Information from http://www.borosix.co.uk/info/real_fake.html

01. If you have the time and you are very serious about the buying the flyer, do some thorough research on the flyer. The work you put in by thoroughly researching the item could save you a lot of money in the long run. There's around a dozen related websites, forums and message boards that can at least provide you with a decent scan of the flyer, it's dimensions, different variations and could possibly give you a wealth of valuable information on "my precious", sorry.

If you have the item in your hands and you still question it's auenticity.

02. Take a while to look at the suspect item very carefully, typically the front of any good rave flyer should be very clear and vivid with hardly any blurring. Any text should [ in most cases ] be sharp and vibrant, if the item you have is cloudy, has poor contrast and the text is bleeding into the image and not as sharp as it should be, you could have a lemon.

03. Touch and examine the item as the majority of oldskool flyers should have be printed directly into the paper itself and could have a light coating of varnish or glossy material to help protect it futher. If your flyer has rasied edges on the paper, too dull or too shiny in places, sorry.

04. Check the suspect item against another flyer [ from the same promoter ] in your possession to check if it is the right material, thickness and weight as the majority of promoters would have used the same printers and used the same paper stock throughout [ they sometimes also would have printed up to four flyers a time ] to save on costs of a print run.

05. Inspect the suspect item for signs of yellowing and discolouration. Oldskool rave flyers [ or any sort of paper material ] will degrade, have some yellowing or the text will fade very slightly with time. Most flyers should [ in the majority of cases ] show general signs of wear and tear due to light exposure, storage and constant handling.

Please Note: This doesn't mean that you should treat mint examples with caution as some people have stumbled on an acid house flyer collection which has been left untouched for up to twenty+ years, which would throw the above theory out the window!.

06. Measure the relief [ if any ] around the flyer to confirm if your flyer measures the same as an original flyer. Examine the suspect items edges and corners, if they have been freshly cut and too straight, your flyer could be counterfeit!.

07. Hold the suspect item up to a light and check throughly to see if the backside text is straight and true, also examine to see if there are any pieces of text missing anywhere and check it is the right colour, use another flyer for a comparision.

08. As strange as this my sound, give your item a sniff as old flyers should have a funky tinge or smell musty if they have been stored in a loft.

09. Also check and see if there are any blu tac stains or creases you can't feel. A blu tac mark should leave in impression or in worst cases a stain on the flyer.

10. Photocopiers only have the ability to replicate an image so the suspect flyer will leave some discrepancies. Copiers will also pick up and copy any dirt or debris on it's plate or on the actual flyer. If you have a dirt patch on your item, give the area a light scratch and see if the dirt will come off.

This site is for people to advertise sales of their flyers, ones they want etc.. There was one seller on ebay recently that was trying to sell copies of rare flyers rather than the real thing.. Hence the info above on fake flyers.. Welcome to the site. :-BD

I was getting, picking up or handing out flyers from the age of 15 = 1990
If I have a couple of wrinkles & blemishes, am sure a flyer of the same age would also...
Unless it's been within a dark air tight container..
Id also look abit o white
